Description

This pretty climbing plant with the somewhat difficult botanical name is usually called the "Mini Monstera", also incorrectly "Monstera minima" and "M. deliciosa (Small-leaved)". Rhaphidophora tetrasperma, however, comes from Southeast Asia, not from tropical America like the true Monstera species. This aroid is native to tropical rainforests in southern Thailand and Malaysia. It climbs several metres high on tree trunks and rocks, attaches itself with its roots and also forms longer aerial roots. The slit leaves are only about 15 cm long. The shoots can also grow creeping on the ground.

Like the real Monstera deliciosa or the Pothos, the "Mini Monstera" is not dependent on the humid rainforest climate of its home area and therefore grows well both in humid terrariums and as a houseplant. Normal, loose potting soil is ideal. It should be kept moderately moist, but never waterlogged. If the plant only receives daylight and is not given additional lighting, it should be given a houseplant fertiliser in spring and summer, but not in the darker autumn and winter. The light requirement is low, but a bright place without full sun is ideal. Temperatures are best at a minimum of 20 °C and should not fall below 15 °C for long periods. Attach or tie the shoots where they are to climb. In a dry environment, however, the roots hardly attach themselves to the support. Propagation is easy by head cuttings and partial cuttings; stems lying on the ground take root at the nodes.

With its origin in tropical rainforests and its Monstera-like appearance, Rhaphidophora tetrasperma is a "jungle plant" par excellence. Its low demands and relative smallness make it versatile as a climbing or hanging plant, not only for rainforest terrariums.
