Description

The Sword brake fern, Pteris ensiformis, is also mislabelled as Pteris cretica. However, it has more finely pinnate leaves than the Cretan brake fern. It is widespread in tropical and subtropical Asia, Oceania and north-eastern Australia and occurs on moist soil in forests. Mostly forms with silvery-white stripes on the leaflets like 'Victoriae' and 'Evergemiensis' are on the market. The fern grows about 30 - 50 cm tall and wide. The spore-bearing fronds are taller with narrower pinnae than the spore-less fronds. They have the spore capsules in a fringe on the underside of the leaf.

This fern grows in loose, humus-rich soil that is kept evenly moist and must not dry out, but must not become waterlogged either. When the fern is well established, it can be supplied with a houseplant fertiliser. As a shade to semi-shade plant, it does not need much light, but grows best in bright light without direct sun. Higher humidity above 60 % is favourable. The temperature should be at least 20 °C and should not fall below 15 °C for a long time.

With its bushes of pinnate, striking silvery-white fronds, Pteris ensiformis sets a bright accent on the terrarium floor. It suits rainforest terrariums as well as somewhat drier tropical terrariums.
