Description
The Mondo grass is not a true grass but more closely related to lily of the valley, dragon tree and asparagus. It is native to shady, damp places in East Asia and is widely used as an ornamental plant, especially in warmer countries. A dwarf form is marketed under various cultivar names such as 'Minor', 'Kyoto', 'Kyoto Dwarf' and also as "Pussilus". It only grows to around 10 cm tall. Ophiopogon japonicus forms dense clumps or turfs of wiry, curved, 2-4 mm wide leaves, underground rhizomes and stolons. Small nodding light purple flowers appear on short inflorescences, followed by black-blue spherical fruits.
Ophiopogon japonicus grows in pretty much any soil that is kept slightly moist. Temporary drought can be survived thanks to water-storing root tubers, while permanent waterlogging leads to rotting. The plant needs little light, but grows more vigorously in a bright position. The Japanese snake's beard is very temperature tolerant and even partially hardy in Central Europe, but overwinters more safely in frost-free conditions. It can also be kept warm all year round. The plant can be propagated by dividing older clumps and cutting off the underground runners.
This little "grass" is a robust, hard-wearing and shade-tolerant plant for various types of terrarium. The Dwarf mondo grass is versatile and can also be used as a turf-like ground cover. It also grows in tropical rainforest terrariums, although it originates from subtropical to warm-temperate latitudes with cool winters.
