Description

Neoregelia 'Fireball' is a beautiful, relatively small, easy-to-care-for Bromeliad cultivar that can turn fire-red under strong light. It is a cultivar of unknown species affiliation, first imported into the USA from Brazil by Nat DeLeon in 1959. The single leaf rosette grows to about 16 cm in height and 25 cm in width. Like other Neoregelias, it is a funnel or tank Bromeliad; water can collect in the centre of the rosette. Under favourable conditions, short-lived violet flowers may also appear there. The plant forms runners, thereby creating a colony of interconnected rosettes. The smooth leaves with a rounded tip are about 2.5 cm wide. When grown in moderate light, the plant is more green with a reddish base of the rosette. Red colouration increases with intense lighting or sunny exposure if the plant receives daylight.

This Bromeliad is particularly suited for epiphytic cultivation on branches, also on back and side walls, with a little epiphyte substrate, e.g., moss. It is also suitable as a pot and ground plant in loose, well-drained substrate. Higher humidity of about 60 - 90% is optimal, and the temperature should be above 15 °C. When watering regularly with soft water, e.g., by misting, water can also be added to the funnel. This should be poured out and renewed at longer intervals. The plant should be able to dry off between waterings. If kept as a pot or ground plant, waterlogging must be avoided at all costs. When plants on runners have grown to about a third the size of the mother rosette, they can be separated for propagation and re-bound or potted. Otherwise, this relatively slow-growing plant will over time form a colony of several rosettes.

Neoregelia 'Fireball' is a versatile epiphyte for tropical terrariums and is well-suited for medium terrarium sizes. This Bromeliad is a special eye-catcher when it can develop its fiery red colouration in a very bright spot.
