Description
Fittonia albivenis, also known as Fittonia argyroneura and F. verschaffeltii, is a low herbaceous plant native to the undergrowth of South American rainforests. This species is called the Mosaic plant because of its striking leaf pattern and includes many small, colourful cultivated forms. Forms with pink tones are labelled by nurseries as ‘Rosa’, ‘Rosanervig’ or ‘Pink’. It is a collective name for several similar cultivars such as ‘Pink Forest Flame’ or ‘Pink Anne’. Accordingly, our plants supplied as Fittonia albivenis ‘Pink’ can vary in leaf shape and pattern. They have a pink to light purple vein pattern on a green background.
Fittonia albivenis grows well in loose, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil that is kept moderately moist. It is sensitive to drought, but the soil must not become waterlogged either. When the plant is well established, it can be supplied with a houseplant fertiliser. Higher humidity above 60 % is favourable. The temperature range is about 16 to 28 °C. The Fittonia is a semi-shade plant and is best placed in bright light, but not in full sun if grown in daylight.
The mosaic plant is a beautiful example of the extremely diverse Acanthaceae family, which contains many decorative plants from tropical forests. It is an ideal ground plant for rainforest terrariums and other closed containers such as bottle gardens and biOrb. It forms a carpet with its spreading shoots over time. With the pink varieties, very colourful plantings are possible together with other Fittonia albivenis forms such as ‘White’ and ‘Red’.
