Description

The Spiral water trumpet is a highly variable species from the south-west of India. It occurs there in and along rivers, in marshy habitats and even in rice fields. Some forms are very good, robust aquarium plants. In their submerged form, they sometimes have very different leaf lengths and colouration; for example, some years ago the company Dennerle sold a C. spiralis with very long, narrow, dark green to brownish submerged leaves. Only a few are traded under specific names, such as Cryptocoryne spiralis "Red" and "Cook’s form".

The emersed leaves of our plant are green and rather smooth; the submerged ones are olive-brown, somewhat marbled, relatively firm, arching and have a wavy margin. They grow to about 23 – 26 cm long and 1.8 cm wide. This form of Cryptocoryne spiralis resembles Cryptocoryne crispatula var. albida ("costata") in the aquarium, but is more robust and vigorous. It forms a dense bush through daughter rosettes at the base and also produces runners.

Cryptocoryne spiralis has no special requirements and grows well in soft to moderately hard water, even in aquaria without additional CO2, ideally at 23–27 °C. It is not a low-light plant, but moderate lighting is sufficient. A nutrient-rich substrate greatly promotes its growth. Propagation is by runners or by separating daughter plants at the base. The latter can be somewhat laborious, as the plant develops a strong root system.

The form of Cryptocoryne spiralis we offer grows to about 25 cm high and at least as wide, making it best suited to the midground. It can be used in a variety of ways as an aquarium plant.

Nice green colours and very long narrow leaves, perfect in the background! About two plants per pot, but lots of healthy looking long 30 cm leaves!
