Description

Elder Roots from WIO are gnarled, slender roots that allow for the creation of creative and sophisticated aquascapes. They can also be used as hardscape in terrariums. The twisted roots can be beautifully planted with mosses and small epiphytic plants. Thanks to their dark colour, they create a natural contrast and become a real visual highlight. Each set contains a varying number of roots, allowing every set to create a unique aquascape. Elder Roots are pre-packed and individual selection of pieces is not possible.

Note

To ensure long-lasting enjoyment of the roots, WIO recommends the following:

Rinse the roots under running water before placing them in the aquarium. Then soak them for 24 hours.
Initially, the roots must be secured against floating. Use stones as weights or anchors, wood fasteners, moss cotton or glue until the root becomes waterlogged and sinks.
At first, the roots may release harmless tannins that can slightly tint the water brown. This phenomenon also occurs in natural blackwater streams. Water changes can reduce tannin levels.
If this colouring is not desired, the roots can be boiled for several hours or pre-soaked outside the aquarium for around four weeks to release tannins in advance.
A harmless bacterial film may form on the roots, which can resemble a layer of mould. It can easily be siphoned off if necessary and usually disappears on its own after about four weeks.

Warnings:

Splinters and sharp points may cause injury during handling. Handle with care.
Dust may irritate eyes and skin. Avoid contact and rinse with water if necessary.
Tannins may lower the pH value in the aquarium. Monitor especially in sensitive systems.
Unsoaked pieces may float and shift the layout. Soak or boil before use.
Mould may develop if stored in damp conditions.
Small pieces may be swallowed by children or pets. Keep out of reach.

General information:

Ensure proper curing before use in the aquarium. For new aquariums or small amounts: soak in warm water for about 24 hours and rinse thoroughly. For established aquariums: boil for 30 - 60 minutes, then soak in clean water with daily water changes until the water is mostly clear and the wood sinks.
Introduce gradually to avoid rapid changes in water parameters. Start with smaller pieces and monitor pH/KH/GH regularly.
Sharp edges can be sanded if necessary. Wear gloves to avoid splinters. Wash hands after handling.
A biofilm may form initially. This is harmless and often consumed by algae eaters. Remove gently if needed.
Store in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Protect from direct sunlight and high humidity. Transport in a closed container to avoid damage and contamination.

Handling instructions:

Rinse the cured roots again before placing them in the aquarium.
Create natural structures and hiding places. If buoyant, secure under stones or decorations.
Introduce gradually and observe animal behaviour.
Perform partial water changes if tannins darken the water excessively. Remove detritus around the roots regularly.
