Description
UNS Controsoil Brown – Extra Fine is a high-quality soil substrate designed for planted aquariums and highly detailed aquascapes. This natural substrate consists of a mixture of soil and volcanic ash and provides ideal conditions for healthy plant growth. The natural brown coloration creates a particularly natural look in the aquarium and harmonises perfectly with driftwood, stones and planted layouts.
Unlike many heavily pre-fertilised aquarium substrates, Controsoil releases only small amounts of ammonium. This significantly reduces the risk of ammonia spikes during the cycling phase. At the same time, the substrate can absorb impurities from the water and supports the colonisation of beneficial bacteria that help establish a stable biological balance in the aquarium.
Controsoil also buffers the pH and can lower carbonate hardness (KH), creating slightly acidic water conditions. These parameters are ideal for many aquatic plants as well as shrimp and tropical ornamental fish. The “Extra Fine” grain size is particularly suitable for nano aquariums, very delicate foreground plants and aquascapes where an especially smooth substrate surface is desired.
The substrate does not need to be rinsed before use and can be added directly to the aquarium. This allows planted aquariums to be set up quickly and easily.
If you prefer a darker contrast in your layout instead of the brown colour, Controsoil Black Extra Fine offers the same very fine grain size in black. For foreground plants with slightly stronger root systems or aquascapes that require a bit more structure, the Brown Fine variant is a suitable option, while the coarser standard grain size Brown Normal is recommended for larger aquariums or plants with stronger root systems.

Application
The substrate should not be rinsed before use. After setting up the aquarium, slight water cloudiness may occur but will clear quickly through filtration and water changes.
Controsoil is added directly to the aquarium as a substrate and does not need to be rinsed beforehand. An even substrate layer provides plants with a stable base for rooting. During the initial cycling phase, regular water changes are recommended to stabilise the water parameters.

Cleaning
For maintenance of the substrate, it is recommended to regularly siphon off debris during water changes. The substrate should only be cleaned lightly at the surface to preserve the biologically active layers and beneficial bacteria within the soil.

- Carefully sweep up or vacuum spilled material to minimise dust formation.
