Description

Tillandsia funckiana is often counted as Tillandsia andreana, but the plants cultivated as T. andreana look clearly different and form rather compact rosettes. The plants known as Tillandsia funckiana, on the other hand, develop drooping stems up to about 15 cm long, densely covered with leaves. T. andreana and T. funckiana are colourful at flowering time, with both having a very handsome, fiery red, tubular flower appearing at the shoot apex, visited by hummingbirds in the nature. They are native to the humid tropics of Colombia and Venezuela and grow as epiphytes on trees or also as lithophytes on rock faces. The silvery grey-green leaves of Tillandsia funckiana are narrow like needles and about 3 - 6 cm long. The shoots form adherent roots at the base and side shoots, so that a bush grows up over time.

T. funckiana belongs to the green or rainforest Tillandsias, which prefer a more humid environment than the so-called grey Tillandsias. Nevertheless, it is an "air plant" that can absorb water and nutrients entirely via absorbent scales on the leaves. The roots serve mainly as an adhesive organ. The plant is attached to a solid base such as wood or stone. It prefers regular moistening and thrives best in a bright area, with daylight cultivation but without direct midday sun. Watering can be done by dipping as well as by misting. After watering, the plant should be allowed to dry. Ideally, an orchid and tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer.

Side shoots appear especially after flowering. For propagation, these can be separated from a size of about one third of the mother shoot. If they are not separated, a larger tuft with many shoots will develop over time.

Tillandsia funckiana is a graceful epiphytic plant that stands out with its hanging shoots densely covered with needle-like leaves. At flowering time it is a special eye-catcher with its fiery red flowers that contrast with the silvery-grey leaf colour. It can be wonderfully integrated into smaller rainforest terrariums. Especially on branches or in rock crevices it can be cultivated well.
