Description
Tillandsia disticha was first described and named by Karl Sigismund Kunth in 1816. It occurs in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru on rocks as well as epiphytically on trees. It is a variable species with different forms depending on the location. Werner Rauh described the plant with three completely different growth forms, depending on the country of origin. One form appears as a green plant with a pseudobulb inhabited by ants in the coastal region of Ecuador. In drier regions, the Tillandsia grows rather grey and free of ants. At high altitudes, around 1800 m, the terrestrial forms form very large false bulbs, in addition to an overall size of about 60 cm. This Tillandsia forms an upright, slender rosette of fine, 10 - 50 cm long, silverish grey leaves and a light yellow, branched inflorescence. It shows itself to be an extremely adaptable plant.
T. disticha is a desert or dry Tillandsia and belongs to the "grey" Tillandsias. It prefers a very light, airy place in the terrarium without permanent humidity.
These "air plants" take up nutrients and water exclusively from the atmosphere with the help of many small suction scales on their leaves.
It is recommended to spray the Tillandsie two to three times a week with soft water.
Ideally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer.
As with almost all Tillandsia species, T. disticha also forms several offspring at its base after flowering.
These can be carefully separated when they are about one third the size of the mother plant. If they are not separated, they grow together to form a larger clump.
T. disticha retains its slender, tall form as far as possible and, with its equally slender leaves, appears like a firm grass that is influenced by the wind. This makes it ideal for dry and slightly moist terrariums and it can be tied up close to the ground or used in dry, well-drained substrate. Waterlogging should be avoided in any form, as the plant could rot.
