Description

Of the countless spikemoss species, Selaginella martensii is quite common in cultivation. The primitive spikemosses, which have existed since the Palaeozoic era, are often counted among "fern allies" but are neither moss nor fern, but belong to the Lycophytes. Most species are found in the tropics and subtropics, a few in the colder zones. Martens' spike moss is a larger species from Mexico and other Central American countries up to Panama. It grows about 20-30 cm tall and at least as wide. Its shoots, about 6-7 mm wide, grow ascending to horizontal, are covered with rows of small leaves and branch strongly, resembling fern fronds. They send "aerial roots" to the ground, actually so-named rhizophores from which the actual roots grow. The shoot tips are often very light-coloured, almost creamy white.

Selaginella martensii grows in loose, sandy-humic soil that is kept slightly moist and must neither dry out nor become waterlogged. When the plant is well established, it can be supplied with a houseplant fertiliser. This spikemoss is a semi-shade plant and should be placed in moderate light, but without direct sun if grown in daylight. Higher humidity than 60 % is recommended. Temperatures around 20 °C are optimal, 15 °C should not be fallen below for a longer period of time.

With its spreading, frond-like branching, "primeval" looking shoots, Selaginella martensii is an eye-catcher on the terrarium floor. This clubmoss is a taller ground cover for tropical rainforest and subtropical moist forest terrariums. In smaller containers, a single bush makes an attractive specimen plant.
