Description
The False Aralia is also listed under Dizygotheca or Schefflera. This tropical plant with beautiful palmately pinnate foliage originates from moist forests, sometimes dry forests, in the southwest of New Caledonia, a Pacific archipelago with unique endemic flora. In the tropics Plerandra elegantissima becomes a tall tree, but as an ornamental it is kept small and shrubby by pruning and cutting propagation. There are different cultivars, 'Bianca' has relatively small, coarsely pinnate leaves with white margins, 7-9 cm long.
The False Aralia grows best in well-drained, humus-rich soil. This is kept slightly moist and should neither dry out nor become waterlogged. When the plant is well established, it can be supplied with a houseplant fertiliser. The temperature is best above 20 °C and should not fall below 16 °C for a long time. A bright place without full sun is recommended. Propagation is by cuttings.
Plerandra elegantissima 'Bianca' is suitable for rainforest as well as drier tropical terrarium types. Its white-edged, palmate leaves contrast with many other tropical plants. Old plants make striking solitaires, but young plants also make a pretty accent on the terrarium floor.
