Description

Japanese mondo grass looks like a dark green grass, but is related to Lily of the valley, Dracaena and Asparagus. It comes from shady, damp places such as forests and bushes, slopes and stream banks in China, Korea and Japan, where its root tubers are used as a remedy. Especially in warmer countries, it is used as a robust, shade-tolerant ground cover in gardens and parks. In classical Chinese gardens, its dark, evergreen grassy tufts line rockery borders. Ophiopogon japonicus forms dense clumps of wiry, arching, 2-4 mm wide basal leaves, underground rhizomes and runners. Small nodding light-purple flowers appear on short inflorescences, followed by black-blue globular fruits. The species O. japonicus grows to a height of about 10-50 cm, usually around 25 cm.

Ophiopogon japonicus grows in pretty much any soil that is kept slightly moist. Temporary drought is survived thanks to the water-retaining root tubers, permanent waterlogging leads to rot. The plant needs little light, but grows more vigorously in a bright position. The Japanese mondo grass is very temperature-tolerant and even conditionally hardy in Central Europe, but hibernates more safely frost-free. It can also be kept warm all year round. The plant can be propagated by dividing the older tufts and cutting off the underground runners.

This Far Eastern evergreen forest "grass" is a robust, hardy and shade-tolerant plant for various terrarium types. Mondo grass, also called Japanese snake's beard, also grows in tropical rainforest terrariums, although it originates from subtropical to warm temperate latitudes with cool winters.
