Description
Neoregelia 'Amazon' is a hybrid cultivar from the bromeliad genus Neoregelia. It is a stemless funnel bromeliad. Neoregelia species are native to humid, tropical regions of South America and are mostly found as epiphytes on trees. The linear-lanceolate leaves of the cultivar 'Amazon' are intensely coloured. Towards the rosette center, strong shades of red, purple and pink are developed. The leaves grow to about 1,5 cm width and approx. 10 - 15 cm in legth. The rosette center of this colourful bromeliad forms a funnel. This funnel collects water and enables the bromeliads in nature to survive long dry periods well. The funnel water should be replenished at regular intervals outside the flowering period (June - August), but should be changed every 3 to 4 weeks so that it does not become putrid. N. 'Amazon' develops a short inflorescence that is sunken into the funnel of the rosette, bearing purple to pale blue flowers.
Unlike many other bromeliads, the mother rosette does not die immediately after flower and daughter plant formation. Without any intervention, the pups and mother thus grow together to form a pretty and voluminous clump. However, the pups can also be carefully removed and separated when they are about a third of the size of the mother plant.
This very compact bromeliad does not usually exceed 15 cm in height, but quickly forms many offshoots and is therefore also excellent for small rainforest terrariums.
