Description
The best-known "Swiss cheese plant" is the giant Monstera deliciosa, but there are a lot of other, smaller species. Of these, Monstera adansonii has recently become better known as a houseplant. This species is very variable and widespread in tropical America from southern Mexico to Brazil. It climbs trees in rainforests with adhesive roots. The leaves are perforated, but with entire margins and not slitted as in the better known Monstera deliciosa.
Monstera adansonii grows well in normal, loose potting soil that is kept moderately moist and should neither dry out nor become waterlogged. Hydroponics is also possible. When well established, the plant can be given a houseplant fertiliser. As a semi-shade plant, this monstera prefers a bright spot, in daylight cultivation without full sun. Higher humidity of over 60 % is favourable. Temperatures should be at least 20 °C and should not fall below 15 °C for a longer period of time. Attach or tie the shoots where they are to climb. In a dry environment, however, the roots hardly attach themselves to the support. Propagation is done by head cuttings and partial cuttings; stems lying on the ground take root at the nodes.
Monstera adansonii is an exotic looking "jungle plant" of quite manageable size. It is an ideal rainforest or tropical moist forest terrarium plant and can be used in many ways as a climbing or hanging plant.
