Description

Lavender scallops is a particularly pretty succulent that grows quite large and originates from central and south-eastern Madagascar. It is found there on primary rocks at about 100 to 1000 m above sea level. Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi grows as a shrub up to about 50 cm tall with branches that initially creep along the ground but later become erect. Aerial roots can form on the shoots. The fleshy leaves are about 1,5 - 5 cm long, grey-green with partly dark pink tones and have brownish notches. Approx. 15-20 cm high inflorescences with pendulous, tubular, brown-pink flowers appear at the shoot tips.

This relative of the "Flaming Katy" and the "Mother of Million" is cared for like many other succulents: a well-drained, sandy-gravelly substrate like cactus and succulent soil and sparing watering, at most once a week or when the soil has dried superficially. Intermittent dryness is tolerated, but not waterlogging, which leads to rot. The plant needs a bright place. It tolerates full sun in daylight cultivation, which promotes a dark pink leaf colour. Propagation is by shoot and leaf cuttings.

Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi is an easy-care plant for well-lit terrariums that are not too small, e.g. oriented towards dry scrub and rocky habitats. These should not be too low, but this plant of the stonecrop family can also be used in smaller containers when it is still young.
