Description

Hydrocotyle tripartita "Mini Variegated" is a still rare and particularly attractive cultivar of the Three-lobed Pennywort. Its tiny, three-lobed leaves, adorned with cream-white to pale yellow variegation, create an exceptional eye-catching effect. They lend even the smallest aquascapes a delicate, refined appearance. Like the green "Mini" form of Hydrocotyle tripartita, this plant grows with creeping shoots and forms a dense carpet or bush under favourable conditions.

Strong lighting, together with a good supply of CO2 and nutrients via the water column, is recommended for compact, low-growing development. Under lower light levels, the plant grows more loosely, with ascending, bushy shoots. Due to its lower chlorophyll content, this variegated form usually grows somewhat more slowly than the solid green Mini variety. Regular trimming encourages dense branching and a more compact plant cover. Soft to moderately hard water and temperatures between about 20 and 28 °C are well suited. Propagation is easy by means of stem cuttings.

With a typical height of only around 2 to 5 cm, the Variegated Mini pennywort is an excellent foreground to midground plant for nature aquariums and nano aquariums. Its creeping shoots create attractive accents as they spread over small rocks, driftwood or terraces, while the pale variegation provides a striking contrast to dark green carpeting plants and mosses.
