Helanthium tenellum (= Echinodorus tenellus), die Zwerg-Schwertpflanze, gehört zu den am besten geeigneten kleinen Vordergrundpflanzen. Sie wird im Aquascaping gern als grasartiger Bodendecker eingesetzt.
Die Unterwasserblätter sind sehr schmal und je nach Beleuchtungsstärke mittelgrün, olivgrün bis rötlich. Wenn die Pflanze in der Landform im Topf oder in-vitro geliefert wird, sind die Blätter meist hellgrün, teilweise mit lanzettlicher Blattspreite. Erst unter Wasser treiben die typischen, sehr schmalen submersen Blätter aus. Die Pflanze wird im Aquarium meist um die 5 bis 10 cm hoch, unter Umständen auch etwas höher.
So wie die anderen Helanthium-Arten breitet sich H. tenellum im Aquarium schnell mit Ausläufer-"Ketten" aus, die über den Boden kriechen. Eine eigentliche "Rasenwirkung'' erhält man nur bei hoher Lichtintensität. Deswegen darf die Zwerg-Schwertpflanze nicht im Schatten größerer Pflanzen stehen. Die einzelnen Pflanzen im Abstand von einigen Zentimetern einpflanzen, am besten mit einer Pinzette. Falls an emers gelieferten Pflanzen Blütenstände sind, können diese abgeschnitten werden. Ein nährstoffreicher Bodengrund und CO2-Düngung fördern das Wachstum. Unter günstigen Bedingungen kann der Wuchs so schnell sein, dass regelmäßig Ausläufer entfernt werden müssen. Der Rasen sollte gelegentlich ausgedünnt werden, bevor er allzu dicht wird und sich die Ausläuferpflanzen überlagern.
Helanthium tenellum unterscheidet sich von dem hellgrünen Helanthium tenellum "parvulum" durch die schmaleren, dunkleren, oft rötlichen Unterwasserblätter. Diese grasähnliche, feinblättrige Pflanze sorgt dadurch für interessante Farbakzente im Vordergrund.
Helanthium tenellum, the pygmy chain sword, is still also known under its synonym Echinodorus tenellus. It is the smallest known species among the runner-forming sword plants, and rather variable. The variety usually found in trade originates from the American tropics (Brazil?). Its submersed leaves are very narrow, pointed, and of a medium to olive green or even reddish. They grow to a length of 6 to 10 cm, sometimes even longer, and a width of about 1.5 mm. Their widest part lies above the middle, around 2 cm below the tip.
The submersed leaves of another form originating from North America (see Helanthium tenellum "parvulum"), though rarely cultivated today, has always light green leaves that are not as narrow, with around 2 mm width. They have their widest part below the middle.
