Description
Helanthium tenellum 'Madeira' is an attractive new H. tenellum form that differs noticeably from previously known dwarf chain sword forms. Its trade name most likely refers to the Rio Madeira in the Amazon lowlands. Underwater, this grass-like plant usually reaches a height of around 10–15 cm, and under very favourable conditions can grow to nearly 20 cm. Unlike Helanthium tenellum ("Red"), the approximately 2.8 mm wide leaves of 'Madeira' are light to medium green and generally somewhat longer and broader, making it better suited to transitions between the foreground and midground rather than forming a very low carpet. Compared to the similarly light to medium green Helanthium tenellum 'Green', 'Madeira' not only grows taller but also has a finer texture. Like other Helanthium varieties, H. tenellum 'Madeira' quickly forms dense stands through long runner “chains”.
Helanthium tenellum 'Madeira' is a relatively easy and adaptable aquarium plant with fairly fast growth. Medium to strong lighting, a nutrient-rich substrate, temperatures of around 20–28 °C, and a pH value between 5.5 and 7.5 are recommended. Additional CO₂ supplementation is not essential, but greatly enhances growth. Under good conditions, the plant spreads rapidly via runners that grow above the substrate. If these become too dense or start growing over one another or upwards, they can simply be trimmed back. While the entire plant mass can be cut back, regular thinning out and removal of excess runner "chains" is the better maintenance method.
The Madeira dwarf chain sword is a versatile aquarium plant with a natural, grass-like growth habit. Over time, its dense runners create a lively, softly flowing plant cover that adds structure and harmonious depth to aquascapes. Thanks to its medium height, it is ideal for the midground, especially in combination with lower carpeting plants in the foreground. It can be used both for a loose lawn effect and for creating smooth transitions between hardscape elements and taller plants. Helanthium tenellum 'Madeira' is particularly effective in Nature-style and Iwagumi aquascapes, where it creates a natural, slightly wild atmosphere while adding texture and dynamism to the layout.
