Description

Ficus elastica 'Ruby', also known as 'Belize', 'Belize Ruby' or 'Red Ruby', is a strikingly colourful cultivar of the Rubber tree. Ficus elastica originally comes from the tropical rainforests of Asia. This robust fig species from the mulberry family (Moraceae) is characterised by its easy-care properties and its ability to thrive in various environmental conditions, which is why it has long been popular as a houseplant. Ficus elastica ‘Ruby’ is one of several variegated cultivars of the rubber tree. It is sometimes also traded as F. elastica ‘Variegata’, but we offer different plants under ‘Ruby’ and ‘Variegata’. The upper, younger leaves of F. elastica 'Ruby' are bright pink in colour at the leaf edge, the youngest leaves are sometimes light red. This colour changes to creamy white in the older, lower leaves. The youngest leaves of ‘Variegata’ are also more or less pink in colour, but not as pronounced as those of ‘Ruby’. The plant prefers bright locations with indirect light and requires moderate watering, although waterlogging should be avoided at all costs. Due to its origin in a humid, warm climate, it is particularly well suited to terrarium culture, where it replicates part of the tropical microclimate. However, it also tolerates dry air.

In terrariums, Ficus elastica 'Ruby' provides a visually appealing addition with its striking, multi-coloured leaves, which have a mixture of green, white, pink and sometimes red tones. This leaf colouring, combined with the glossy leaf surface and the large, oval leaf shape, makes it a real eye-catcher. Its robust nature and ability to reach a considerable size allow it to serve as a structuring element in larger terrariums, where it can provide shaded areas for smaller plants and hiding places for terrarium inhabitants.
