Description

'Rainers Kitty' is an especially recommendable small Echinodorus cultivar. It was selected by the famous Echinodorus breeder Tomas Kaliebe from a stand of Echinodorus 'Ozelot' and entered the trade in 2002. It is also labeled Echinodorus 'Purpurea' by Dutch nurseries. Its elliptic submerged leaves may get about 20 cm long, but mostly the plant reaches a height of about 15 cm. Good lighting provided, the leaves are wine-red with a conspicuous pattern of many darker spots.

As well as virtually all Echinodorus, 'Rainers Kitty' grows best with abundant macro- and micronutrient supply via the substrate. Strong lighting enhances the intense coloration of the submerged foliage. The water parameters are of subordinate importance, the plant also tolerates hard water, however CO2 supply promotes the growth.

With its bright coloration and striking pattern, Echinodorus 'Rainers Kitty' is an eyecatcher in the aquarium. It is well suited as single plant or group in the midground, also in the foreground of taller tanks. It can even be used as solitary plant in nano tanks.

Echinodorus 'Rainer's Kitty' is a cultivar that was selected from a population of Echinodorus 'Ozelot' by Tomas Kaliebe of the former aquatic plant nursery ZooLogiCa (Altlandsberg near Berlin). It was introduced to the market in about 2002. The name refers to Rainer Leidtholdt, the owner of said nursery.

This variety stays rather small and reaches an overall height of only 10 to 20 cm. Its strikingly wine-red colour and the spotted pattern make it quite unique. Older leaves tend to assume a greener hue.
The very narrowly elliptical leaf blades grow around 10 to 20 cm long and 2 to 4 cm wide, have a slightly undulate margin and a short stalk.

E. 'Rainer's Kitty' somewhat resembles the variety E. 'Rainer's Felix'.
