Description
Cryptocoryne walkeri is a proven, easy-to-cultivate species of water trumpet. Like the closely related species Cryptocoryne wendtii, C. beckettii and C. undulata, it is native to Sri Lanka. The leaves of C. walkeri are stronger, firmer and more upright than those of the other species mentioned. The spathe is yellow to yellow-green. Walker's water trumpet is a very variable species, and various forms are in the aquarium plant trade. Our plant forms intense purple-red leaves with dark stripes underwater. It is also supplied by aquatic plant nurseries as Crypocoryne lutea and incorrectly as Cryptocoryne wendtii "Red". The leaf rosette grows to a height of about 15 to 20 cm in the aquarium and is at least as wide. Over time, underground runners develop a dense stand. Growth is slightly slower than that of the Cryptocoryne wendtii forms.
Walker's water trumpet is just as rewarding an aquarium plant as the other Cryptocorynes from the Sri Lanka group. The plant thrives best in medium to high light intensity. It is suitable for water with medium carbonate hardness. CO2 supply is not essential, but promotes growth. Nutrient-rich substrate is recommended. The most favourable temperatures are between approximately 22 and 28 °C. Propagation is easy via underground runners.
With its moderate growth height, Cryptocoryne walkeri is recommended as a group for the midground. The form with purple-red submerged leaves creates a special accent in the aquarium and provides an effective contrast to light green ground cover plants.
