Description
Bucephalandra sp. "Mini Red" is a compact form of Bucephalandra with an attractive leaf shape and exceptional colouration. Although its trade name resembles "Lamandau Mini Red", "Mini Red" differs through its rounder, more strongly undulating leaves and a more intense bluish-grey metallic sheen. This sheen is caused by the particularly high density of stomata on the upper leaf surface. Its exact species identity and origin remain unknown. However, all Bucephalandra species originate from the island of Borneo, where they grow as rheophytic plants on rocks in fast-flowing rainforest streams. "Mini Red" resembles the "Brownie" forms, which may belong to Bucephalandra pygmaea.
The plant develops densely branched rhizomes and grows in a bushy habit to around 8 cm in height. The obovate leaves have a 1 cm long petiole and a blade measuring approximately 2.5 cm long and 1.1 cm wide. The leaf tip is rounded and slightly notched. Young leaves display attractive reddish-brown tones, while older leaves become dark olive-brown to almost black and exhibit the characteristic metallic sheen. In the aquarium, Bucephalandra sp. "Mini Red" grows rather slowly, but under good conditions it develops reliably and remains vigorous.
Like most Bucephalandras, Bucephalandra sp. "Mini Red" is best attached to hardscape such as rocks or driftwood, where it anchors itself securely with its roots. Moderate lighting, a good supply of CO2 and nutrients, as well as strong water flow, encourage particularly compact and attractive growth. Propagation is straightforward by separating terminal or side shoots. It can also be cultivated in the substrate, provided that the rhizome is not buried, as this may otherwise cause it to rot.
Bucephalandra sp. "Mini Red" is an exceptionally attractive epiphytic plant for hardscape layouts and becomes increasingly impressive as it matures and forms larger colonies.
