Description
According to Tropica, this fantastic epiphyte belongs to Bucephalandra sordidula. This is a variable species that occurs in the province of West Kalimantan on Borneo. Like other Bucephalandras, it grows there on rocks along fast-flowing rainforest streams. However, Bucephalandra sordidula 'Blue' is very different from the B. sordidula form, which was introduced as Bucephalandra sp. "Melawi". It has a much broader, oval leaf shape and the leaf margin is barely wavy.
The submerged leaves of Bucephalandra sordidula 'Blue' have a distinct bluish colour. This plant is extremely easy to care for and thrives in different water values and light levels.
Although Bucephalandra species and forms are usually only temporarily flooded in their natural habitats, they can grow permanently under water. They are primarily perching plants that attach themselves to rock or wood with their roots. However, they can also be attached to the substrate, but the rhizome should not be buried as this could cause it to rot. The plant will then root itself and benefit from the nutrients in the substrate. Growth is generally slow.
Bucephalandras can cope with low light, but develop best with medium light intensity, a constant supply of CO2 and nutrients and good water movement. Strong lighting is tolerated if the nutrient and CO2 supply is sufficient. The temperature can be between around 20 and 27 °C.
We recommend placing Bucephalandras in tanks that are already biologically established. It is best to leave them to grow undisturbed for a longer period. Sudden changes in conditions can cause the leaves to fall off, but the plants usually slowly produce new shoots on the rhizome afterwards.
Bucephalandras are propagated by cutting off side shoots or head shoots, which also promotes branching of the shoots.
Bucephalandra sordidula 'Blue' combines ease of care with a fascinating appearance. This rather small plant is best placed on the hardscape in the midground or as a foreground plant. With its bluish colour, it adds a touch of elegance to the aquarium. Its slow growth means it requires little maintenance and always looks neat and tidy. With its rather dark colour tones, this Bucephalandra contrasts with fresh green mosses, for example.
