Description

The Water hyssop or moneywort is an undemanding aquarium plant classic that was introduced to Europe already more than 100 years ago. Bacopa monnieri occurs in wide parts of the tropics and subtropics, growing above and under water in lakes, rivers and ponds, even in brackish water. This species is somewhat variable, with different forms. The "standard" Bacopa monnieri has an upright, sparsely ramified growth habit as submerged plant. The light green leaves are 1-2,5 cm long, obovate with round tip and narrow base. Leaves and stems are relatively thick and fleshy.

Bacopa monnieri grows relatively slow under aquarium conditions. It is easy to grow and tolerates hard and alkaline water (pH value up to 8), however it prefers good lighting. CO2 supply is not absolutely necessary but enhances the growth, as for all aquarium plants. Nutrient deficiencies are not readily visible except that the growth slows down. In tanks with high CO2 concentration and strong lighting, regular macro- and micronutrient supply is necessary. As well as other stem plants, this Bacopa is easily propagated by cuttings. It may also develop runner-like creeping shoots at the base of the stems.

This relatively small-leaved Bacopa species looks best as a group in the midground to background where it provides a contrasting accent with its light green coloration. It is also well suited to create "plant streets" in Dutch style aquariums. Bacopa monnieri is also interesting as emersed plant for paludariums and Wabi-Kusa. It has a creeping or hanging growth habit in its terrestrial form. Good lighting provided, one can expect its nice white to light mauve flowers.

Bacopa monnieri, or water hyssop, is distributed in many subtropic and tropical regions of the earth, growing on the shores of lakes, riversides and pond edges. It is even found in slightly saline locations near the seashore.
Depending on the water height respectively the season (dry or rainy), wild B. monnieri grows emersed, with a creeping habit and submersed with upright stems. Its emersed form develops beautiful light pink flowers in the leaf axils.
Bacopa monnieri is an Ayurvedic medicinal plant, known under the name of "brahmi" - a name for many medinical herbs, though. In Vietnamese cuisine, it is used as a vegetable.

Bacopa monnieri has been long known in aquaristics and is one of the most uncomplicated and widespread plants. Due to a mix-up, it has been erroneously sold as a novelty plant under the name of Hedyotis salzmannii. (read more)
