Description

Aerangis biloba is a captivating small orchid species from the forested areas of Western and Central Africa with seasonally dry tropical climates. Its size of about 10 cm makes it ideal as an epiphyte for terrariums. From summer to autumn, inflorescences appear with an impressive display of about 10 - 12 star-shaped, waxy flowers, emitting a pleasant fragrance reminiscent of gardenias to lilies. These flowers reach a size of about 2.5 cm and are distinguished by their brilliantly white colour. They last for about 3 - 4 weeks. The leaves, typically about 5 - 6 cm, up to a maximum of 12 cm in length and 3 cm wide, are divided at the tip into two round lobes, which gives the species its name.

The Two-Lobed Aerangis is characterised by its high adaptability and robustness. However, its roots are sensitive to excessive moisture, so this orchid thrives best as an epiphyte on materials like wood and cork. For pot culture, a permeable, coarse substrate such as a bark mix should be used. Watering should be regular, taking care to ensure that the roots do not stand in waterlogged conditions. Occasional misting promotes humidity around the plant. During the growing phase, a special orchid fertiliser can be applied every two weeks. A moderately bright, semi-shaded location in daylight culture and temperatures between about 18 and 28 °C are recommended.

Aerangis biloba is an ideal orchid for tropical terrariums. It fascinates with its white flowers and pleasant fragrance, particularly noticeable at night. With its aerial root system and often hanging inflorescences, it contributes to an authentic jungle atmosphere in terrariums.
