Description
The Small mud-mat or "Glosso", Glossostigma elatinoides, is a popular foreground plant that is widely used in aquascaping and Japanese Nature Aquarium layouts. It produces long, creeping, branching shoots both in its emersed and submerged forms. The thin stems carry opposite, spoon-shaped, light to medium green leaves and develop roots at the nodes.
Glossostigma elatinoides is a moderately demanding and fairly fast-growing aquarium plant. Strong lighting is recommended; if the light is too weak or the plant is shaded by others, the shoots tend to grow upright rather than creep along the substrate. Soft to moderately hard water, a complete nutrient supply through both the water column and the substrate, and CO2 addition are recommended. This amphibious plant from the subtropical to temperate regions of Australia and New Zealand tolerates temperatures below 10 °C. In the aquarium, it grows well at 18 to 28 °C, with an optimum range of 22 to 26 °C. However, prolonged temperatures of 30 °C and above are not suitable. To plant it, use tweezers to insert small clumps (about a quarter of a pot for potted plants) a few centimetres apart into the substrate. The creeping shoots soon form a dense carpet. Before the carpet becomes several centimetres thick from overlapping shoots, it should be trimmed, otherwise it may lift away from the substrate.
Glossostigma elatinoides is a very low-growing lawnlike aquarium plant with creeping runners and spatula-like leaves that grows emersed to totally submersed in bogs and flood areas as well as on river banks and lakeshores in its native habitats in Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. Takashi Amano became aware of the hitherto rather unknown plant in 1980. He imported it to Japan via the aquatic plant nursery Dennerle and created the first Nature Aquaria layouts with low-growing carpets of Glossostigma. Meanwhile, Glossostigma elatinoides has become one of the most popular foreground plants in all the world.
It is possible to confound Glossostigma elatinoides with small submersed waterclovers (Marsilea). However, the creeping runners of Glossstigma have opposing leaves (2 leaves per node), those of Marsilea are alternate (1 leaf per node). (read more)
