Giant Vallisneria
Vallisneria australis
Giant Vallisneria
- Also known as Vallisneria gigantea and V. americana "Gigantea"
- Very long, broad, ribbon-shaped leaves
- Green to reddish coloration
- Undemanding plant for large tanks
- Useful to create a jungle-like atmosphere
When supplied as a potted plant and/or bunch, it is very important that it is not planted in direct company of invertebrates. The plant should be watered for at least a week - with regular water changes - before introducing it into your aquarium. The plant nurseries commonly use raw material from Asia for these variants. When planted into an existing ecosystem, it is possible that invertebrates could be harmed. There should be no issues with a new set-up - but regular water changes are advised as well.

Description
The Giant Vallisneria is an easy-to-care-for and fast-growing plant for large and, above all, tall aquariums. It is sold under various names such as "Vallisneria gigantea" and "V. americana 'Gigantea'". However, it is actually Vallisneria australis. This species is native to flowing waters in eastern and southern Australia (Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria). This area has a subtropical to warm temperate climate with hot, humid summers and relatively cool winters.
The leaves grow so long (50-150, sometimes 300 cm, leaf width 1.1 to 3.5 cm) that they float on the surface in most aquariums. This causes other plants to be heavily shaded. This should be taken into account when designing the aquarium. The leaf colouring of Vallisneria australis is variable, with green, reddish and brown tones, sometimes also with a marbled pattern of dark horizontal stripes. Like other Vallisneria species, this species forms a dense stand with its runners.
The very long leaves of Vallisneria australis are relatively tough and strong, but they also bend and break easily during transport. For this reason, the plants sold usually have severely shortened leaves or are young plants. Under favourable conditions, however, they soon develop the long leaves typical of Giant Vallisneria in the aquarium.
Vallisneria australis is an easy, robust aquarium plant that thrives best in nutrient-rich substrate. Moderate lighting is sufficient, but if the light is too weak, the leaves will remain green. CO2 supplementation is not necessary, but promotes growth. Giant Vallisneria also thrives at cooler temperatures (below 20 °C) in unheated tanks. It propagates profusely through runners. Because of its very long leaves, it should be reserved for appropriately large aquariums. The leaves can be shortened, but this often looks unattractive.
The Australian Vallisneria is recommended for the background and side walls of large aquariums at least 50 cm high, where it forms lush thickets with its runners. With its leaves floating on the surface, it creates a natural impression in river biotope aquariums, for example.
