Description

"Velvet Tricolor" oder "Velvet 3 Color" is a small, narrow-leaved Bucephalandra that is said to be found in the Sanggau area in West Kalimantan (Indonesian part of Borneo). Its exact locality and species belonging is unknown to us. We propagate this Bucephalandra in our aquaria for more than one year. Its linear leaves have a blade of about 30 x 4.5 mm and a 5 mm long petiole. The margin is slightly curled, the tip blunt with a short, needle-like projection. Young leaves are light brown-red, later changing to dark brown-green. The 1.5 to 2 mm wide rhizome is much ramified, causing a dense, bushy growth habit. Grown submerged, the plant reaches a height of about 6 cm Until now our plants have not yet flowered.

According to our experience, this small Bucephalandra is not only very decorative but also remarkable for its excellent aquarium suitability and productive propagation. In our opinion it deserves a wide distribution in the aquarium hobby. As well as other Bucephalandra forms, it is best used as epiphyte on rock or wood, however it can also be fixed to the ground, provided that the rhizome is not buried. It is easily propagated by cuttings. Medium lighting, good CO2 and nutrient supply and water current are recommendable.

Bucephalandra sp. "Velvet Tricolor" is very interesting for the aquascaping as a low growing, bushy epiphyte for the hardscape, also in bigger amounts due to its good reproduction.
