Description

The precise Macherey-Nagel Visocolor ECO carbonate hardness test is very well suited for aquaristic use and stands out in particular due to its long durability and the many possible measurements.

Determination method is titration with hydrochloric acid against a mixed indicator whose colour changes when the pH reaches 4,5 (basis for the reaction in analogy to DIN EN ISO 9963-1 C24)

The term "carbonate hardness" is used for the part of calcium and magnesium ions present in the form of carbonate or hydrogen carbonate. Normally, carbonate hardness is smaller than total hardness. It is only larger under very special circumstances, which need to be cleared up. It is e.g. possible that alkaline hydrocarbonates were added or that the buffering capacity is very high.
