Description

Bucephalandra pygmaea is also known as Bucephalandra sp. "Kapit" or B. motleyana "Kapit". It comes from the south and the west of Sarawak. Up to now, it has only rarely been imported, and it is still not widely spread in the hobby. This especially beautiful small Bucephalandra variant grows to a height of only 3 cm and has very coarse dark leaves, often with a greyish-blue shine on the upper side and a reddish underside. The leaf forms vary. They are about 1 cm wide and sit on short stalks. The rhizomes and younger leaves are of a brownish red. The rhizomes are relatively short and thick, have a creeping to ascending growth habit and form many lateral shoots. If you remove the main shoot in older, mature plants, you will get especially dense bushes with very small leaves (in the beginning). Bucephalandra pygmaea grows and reproduces very slowly. You will find submersed flowers with a white spate time and again. Like all Bucephalandra variants, B. pygmaea attaches itself strongly to rocks with its roots. It is best cultivated as epiphyte.
