Description
Tillandsia streptocarpa is a variable species native to Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and southern Peru. It grows in seasonally dry tropical areas, in dry forests or thorny shrubs as an epiphyte as well as on rocks, from low altitudes up to about 2300 m above sea level. Its narrow, pale and up to 25 cm long leaves grow slightly twisted and give the plant a bizarre appearance.
Tillandsia streptocarpa is an "air plant" that can absorb water and nutrients completely via absorbent scales on the leaves. You fix the plant on a solid base such as wood or stone. The species likes a bright location, but without blazing midday sun if grown in daylight. It should be watered regularly with soft water. This can be done by dipping or misting so that the plant can absorb water and nutrients via its absorbent scales. Permanent wetness between the leaf bases is not tolerated, however, and the plant should be allowed to dry off between waterings. Optimally, an orchid and tillandsia fertiliser is added every second watering during spring and summer. Propagation is done by cutting off the children or dividing the "pulk".
Tillandsia streptocarpa is suitable as an epiphyte or perching on stone in terrariums inspired by tropical dry forests, thorn bush or savannah. With good care it develops a beautiful flower spike with up to 10 individual flowers. These flowers have a delicate purple hue.
