Description

Tillandsia albertiana comes from the rainforests of Argentina and Brazil and was named after the botanist Alberto Castellanos. The slender plant does not form an inflorescence with a spike like many species but produces a solitary, deep red flower at its tip.

T. albertiana belongs to the "green" Tillandsias, the rainforest Tillandsias, which can be cultivated as epiphytes but also on loose substrate. They prefer regular humidification and thrive best in a semi-shaded area without direct sunlight. Watering can be done by dipping as well as by misting, so that the plant can absorb water and nutrients via its absorbent scales. Waterlogging of the substrate is not tolerated, as well as permanent wetness of the fine rosette leaves. The plant should be allowed to dry off between waterings. Ideally, an orchid and Tillandsia fertiliser should be added every second watering during spring and summer. After flowering, the mother plant begins to form small offsprings. These can be separated carefully from a size of about one third of the mother rosette. If they are not separated, they will grow together to form a strong tuft.

T. albertiana belongs to the easy-care varieties and is rather small. With its slender shape, the plant is a welcome addition to any rainforest terrarium, but at the latest when its flower appears it attracts special attention. The bright red single flowers can appear like small splashes of colour in a sea of green.
