Description

Rotala mexicana is a polymorphic species that occurs in almost all tropical regions of the world (Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia). In nature, it is an annual marsh and water plant. However, it can be cultivated perennially in the underwater form in aquaria.
Rotala mexicana "Araguaia" is a form of this species that was introduced from eastern Brazil over two decades ago. It is still a rarity in the aquarium hobby and trade. This pretty, graceful stem plant is characterised by upright, brown-red, about 1.3 mm thick stems and about 2 cm long, light green, yellow-green to reddish, linear, pointed, curved leaves. There are usually four leaves in a whorl. The shoots can grow to at least 35 cm high and form dense bushes through branching. Small flower buds often form under water in the leaf axils, which remain unopened. Under suitable conditions, growth is quite fast. In the terrestrial environment (emers), the shoots grow creeping and form small, inconspicuous flowers in the leaf axils.

"Araguaia' is moderately demanding, like other forms of Rotala mexicana (e.g. 'Goias'). It is more demanding in the aquarium than Rotala rotundifolia. Strong lighting, an unshaded spot, even CO2 supply and a constant, complete macro- and micronutrient supply are important, otherwise growth stagnation, blackish colouring and small sprouts may occur. It is best to plant a group, placing individual shoots or clumps of a few shoots a short distance apart in the substrate. Occasional pruning brings the plant into shape and also leads to stronger branching of the shoots. Propagation is done by head cuttings.

Rotala mexicana "Araguaia" is excellent as a bush in the background and midground of aquariums if you provide it with the necessary conditions. Its reddish stems and small, narrow, yellow-green tinted leaves make it a beautiful, finely textured plant.

Rotala mexicana is a stem plant relatively new to the hobby.
As it is found in many tropical and subtropical regions of the earth, e.g. in South America, Western Africa, Australia and Japan, it is not really surprising that this species is very variable. In botanic literature, plants with large areas of distribution often have several synonyms - as does Rotala mexicana. One of them is Rotala pulsilla, under which name this plant is also known in the hobby.

The first R. mexicana variety that went into trade originated from South America and was offered by the Japanese company Rayon Vert. It was first listed as Rotala sp. 'Araguaia'. Varieties from Australia and other regions are still rare and difficult to obtain.

The South-American variety R. mexicana 'Araguaia' is a plant that either thrives or dies off. (read more)
