Description

This stem plant is labeled by the Dutch nursery Songrow as "Hygrophila red-green". It is said to be native to Southeast Asia. It probably belongs to the Hygrophila ringens group und might be identical to Hygrophila salicifolia "Rot" ("Red"). The emersed plant is about 25-50 cm tall, its stiff stems are covered with glandular hairs. Its light purple flowers form dense clusters in the leaf axils. The lanceolate leaves are up to 12 cm long. Especially the upper leaves are reddish-green to red-brown, and the midrib forms a fine reddish stripe. In the submerged form the plant grows upright and is hairless. It has a moderate growth rate under aquarium conditions.

Hygrophila sp. "Red-Green" is described as rather demanding. Good lighting and macro- and micronutrient supply are recommendable, as well as CO2 addition. The favourable temperatures lie between about 23 and 28 °C. As well as other stem plant, it can be propagated by cuttings of the stem tips and side shoots. When it grows emersed, it readily develops flowers.

This Hygrohila looks best as a group in the midground to background. It contrasts well with light-green plants with its red-brown tones. Hygrophila sp. "Red-Green" can also be used as emersed paludarium plant in wet ground or shallow water.
