Description
'Green White' is a variegated cultivar of the long known Hygrophila difformis. Its lobed underwater leaves are strikingly yellow to white along the midrib and side nerves, especially at the shoot tip. Older leaves become entirely green. As well as the normal Water wisteria, its shoots become 6-12 cm wide and at least 30 cm tall. This variegated form is alredy known since the 1970s but rather rarely available in trade.
Hygrophila difformis is easy to grow and also recommendable for beginners. Medium lighting is sufficient, however good lighting enhances the light pattern of the cultivar 'Green White'. The plant thrives best with higher temperatures of about 24-28 °C. It should be noted that the emersed (terrestrial) form of Hygrophila difformis differs much from the underwater form. After planting in the tank it develops its typical divided submerged foliage.
Hygrophila difformis 'Green White is especially beautiful in the midground or background of large aquariums where it can create a distinctive group. It is also interesting as emersed plant in paludariums and Wabi-Kusa. Also its undivided emersed leaves show a striking variegation.
Please be aware that the submerse form of this plant could contain snails and other invertebrates.
