Description

'Indian Red' is a decorative, quite small Echinodorus cultivar, bred by Hans Barth (Dessau, Germany) in the 1990s. The parents of this hybrid were Echinodorus "aschersonianus" (probably E. × schlueteri) and E. "horemanii Red". The narrowly elliptic underwater leaves have a slightly wavy edge and twisted tip. Especially the youngest leaves feature vibrant red-brown to dark red colours, good lighting provided. The submerged plant reaches a height of only 10-20 cm. As well as most Echinodorus, the plant is mostly delivered in its emersed (terrestrial) form with rather green, longer stalked leaves. Planted into the aquarium, it develops new submerged, colourful leaves.

As well as other swordplants, Echinodorus 'Indian Red' benefits much from a nutrient-rich bottom. It develops most colourful leaves in a light, unshaded place; too few light leads to rather green foliage.

With its low growth, this swordplant cultivar fits well also in small tanks and in the midground to foreground of larger aquariums. It provides a colourful accent as solitary plant or small group.
