Description
This crypt forms long, narrow, band-like leaves with an undulate margin and a reddish-brown marbled pattern. This discerns it very much from the variant usually found in trade, "Cook's variant" of C. spiralis with shorter medium-green leaves. The leaves are said to grow to over 50 cm in length, however, they tend to stay shorter in our aquaria. The plant was introduced to the market in the 1970s, back then under the name "Cryptocoryne retrospiralis". It is similar to Cryptocoryne crispatula var. flaccidifolia, however, it was identified as Cryptocoryne spiralis by means of its flower stalks. This crypt originates from India and has many variants. "B 20" refers to the collective number under which this C. spiralis variant is known among Cryptocoryne collectors. This cultivar of Cryptocoryne spiralis has long been known as undemanding aquarium plant and can be used in the same way as the long-leaved variants of Cryptocoryne crispatula - e.g. as a high grasslike population in the background or on the sides, or as large solitary bush in the middle ground. Its long floating leaves make Cryptocoryne spiralis "B 20" a highly suitable plant for stream biotope aquaria. Like other crypts it reproduces though subterraneous runners. When cultivated emerged it forms interesting brownish-red flower stalks. The leaves of the emerged form are much shorter than those of the underwater form. We cultivate and propagate Cryptocoryne spiralis "B 20" in our own tanks and are proud to be able to offer it to our customers, even though only in small numbers.
Please be aware that the bunch/potted variation of this plant could contain snails and other invertebrates.
Cryptocoryne spiralis is a narrow-leaved water trumpet from the Asian mainland. It is found in the south of India and in Bangladesh, where it grows on riverbanks, temporarily flooded wetlands and in rice paddies, where it is considered a weed. Its species name hints to the spiralling spathe blade (up to five turns) of its inflorescence. The species is quite variable, two varieties have been described (var. spiralis and var. cognatoides), but there are also intermediate forms.
Those plants imported some time ago were more or less difficult in cultivatikon and only of limited use in the aquarium. However, the form of C. spiralis that is found in the hobby today is quite easy in cultivation and reproduces well by a large number of runners. It was brought from India by Prof. C.D.K. Cook in the 1990s.
As long as it does not bloom, the emersed form of C. (read more)
