Description

The Mexican Coontail is also known as Ceratophyllum demersum "Rotstängelig" (= "Red-stemmed"). It is a decorative tropical Coontail variant that was found in the lake Catemaco in eastern Mexico. Compared to common Ceratophyllum demersum it is more densely branched and more delicate. The stem is distinctly dark red, the toothed leaves middle to dark green.

The Red-stemmed Coontail is an undemanding aquatic plant, especially recommendable for initial planting and for breeding tanks. It is a fast grower, but we have noticed that it does not grow as rampant as common C. demersum. Ceratophyllum species don't develop roots; the stems can be set in the ground, but they thrive also free floating below the water surface.

This nice variety of common hornwort is also known under the name Cerathophyllum demersum "Rotstängelig" ("red-stemmed"). It originates from Lake Catemaco in the east of Mexico.

In comparison with "standard" forms of C. demersum, C. demersum 'Mexiko' ramifies more readily when kept under the same conditions, and its stems are of a more intensive red colour.
