Description
This colourful, quite small stem plant was known as Nesaea sp. for many years. In 2013 it was described as a new species under the name Nesaea praetermissa. Later it has been moved to the genus Ammannia, as well as all Nesaea species. Its natural distribution is unknown; some websites mention West Africa, but that could not yet be proven. Ammannia praetermissa is usually produced as submerged plant by nurseries in the tropics. The plant is much more delicate than Ammannia (Nesaea) crassicaulis, with slender, firm, upright stems and 2 to 4,5 cm long, opposite leaves. The leaves show olive green to intense wine-red tones.
Ammannia praetermissa is very demanding. Intense lighting, soft water, CO2 additon and complete, regular macro and micronutrient supply via the water column are prerequisites for its successful cultivation. As well as other stem plants it can be propagated by cuttings.
This Ammannia species provides a strong colour accent in the aquarium. It looks best as about 10 to 30 cm high group in the midground and contrasts well with light green plants.
Please be aware that the bunch/potted variation of this plant could contain snails and other invertebrates.
